Neck Pain and Chiropractic Care

What is neck pain?

Neck pain can range from being mild and annoying to being unbearable and incapacitating to a point the person cannot function. Symptoms can also included stiffness, difficulty turning or moving your head in different directions, pain or muscle spasm in the neck area, headaches, TMJ (jaw) problems, muscle weakness or even carpal tunnel problems.

Most instances of neck pain (and stiffness) are minor and commonly caused by sudden injury such as an auto accidents that cause “whiplash” injury of the neck area or chronic bad posture position such as keeping your head or neck in an awkward, twisted position for too long causing the neck joints to “lock up”.

You may be one of the many unfortunates who, after a long and tiring day, fallen asleep in a chair or sofa with your head propped up, only to awake with a stiff and painful neck. Other people suffer from this from repeated activity over time, in a poor biomechanical posture doing some type of activity such as computer / keyboard / mouse interaction.

But neck pain that just won't go away after a day or so is a more serious matter. Neck pain that lasts for days or weeks or keeps coming back is a sign that something isn't right.

Ongoing disease process, sudden injury, posture problems, birth defect, or progressive degeneration of discs (DJD or osteoarthritis) that can come with age may be responsible for the more significant pain you experience.

Examination, diagnosis and treatment by Dr. Marc Lawson, Chiropractor can help determine the underlying causes of such neck pain and get you the treatment needed to quickly relieve your pain and suffering.

Why do I suffer from neck pain?

Almost everyone experiences some sort of neck pain or stiffness at one time or another. Because you are human and walk upright, your head is "balanced" atop your spinal column.

If your neck ligaments, discs, and muscles that support your head are not kept strong and in good condition, you become vulnerable to neck problems from injury or poor posture problems.

As you aged, your neck joints have been worn by previous injury or poor posture over time, are subject to osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative joint disease or DJD).

When this form of arthritis attacks your neck, you feel it as neck pain that gets worse over time. The pain may radiate into your shoulders and arms, and you may feel numbness or tingling in hands and fingers carpal tunnel signs). Arthritis can also involve symptoms including headaches, dizziness, and even a grating/grinding feeling when you move your head.

Part of your chiropractic exam is to check for osteoarthritis of the neck area and see that it is properly treated.
